YEAR 5 VICTORIAN DAY - THURSDAY 18TH APRIL

Dear Year 5 Parents/Carers,                                                                                     March 2024

We are inviting an external provider to come to school on Thursday 18th April, to give our children the chance (through role-play) to experience life as it would have been like in 1897 at the time of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

In the morning the children will be involved in a Victorian schoolroom session. In the afternoon, the children will be able to look at and handle genuine Victorian artefacts. They will also make items, which they will be able to keep. By the end of the day they will have a really good idea of how it felt like to be a Victorian at this time.

For your child to feel fully immersed in the whole day's experience, we are requesting that children come into school wearing a simple Victorian school child costume - further details for costume ideas are attached at the end of this letter.

For the afternoon session (1:45-3pm) we will need 10 parent volunteers across the year group, as each of the workstations will need an adult to supervise the children. You would not need to be dressed up and would need to arrive at 1:45pm so that we are ready to start the session at 2pm promptly. You need to have a DBS with our school to volunteer.

Please email your class teacher or tell your class rep if you can help for this afternoon.

Yours sincerely,

Ms Guard & Mrs Stow

YEAR 5 LIFE SKILLS

Dear Year 5 parents and carers,

Ms Guard and Mrs Stow have launched this term's Life Skills  with all the children at school today and they are very eager to be involved. They have come up with so many ideas for what market stalls they want to run at the life skills comic relief charity fundraiser next Friday 15th March and we need the help of the year 5 parents to have a dig around at home for craft items that can be donated to help the children to make the products, or donate unwanted items that are in good and clean condition.

We are holding two mornings next week at school - on Monday and Thursday - for the children to assemble their products for their stalls, ready for the big event on Friday 15th. The children have organised themselves into groups and today, they have planned what they are going to make and sell and have created posters and decorations to advertise the fundraiser event and their stalls. We have encouraged the children to also use their time at home to continue making items to bring in by Thursday.

Here is the following list for donations (as handed to us from the Year 5 students):

*loose lego and lego figures or parts of lego figures

*books/magazines/notebooks/colouring books pages etc for children

*Disney stationary/stickers/small soft toys - anything Disney related

*range of craft papers (for origami products, paper bookmarks etc)

*beads, charms, thread, wool, ribbon, loom bands, elastics (for bracelets, keyrings etc)

*small washed teddies/beany teddies, squishes (including those mini teddies/squishies that you can get from McDonalds )

*collectable cards e.g. football trading cards, pokemon etc

*fidget toys

*small pebbles/rocks for painting (either already painted ones or plain pebbles ready to be painted)

*small pots of paints (that are suitable for rock painting

*colouring pencils/crayons/general stationary items

*small/mini gaming figures, travel games, card games, mini board games

Please bring items in from Monday 11th March up to Thursday 14th March.

Lastly, the children will also take part in baking cookies to sell to the staff team (and to have themselves as a treat for their hard work). Charlotte and I are organising all the ingredients for the baking at school, which also includes batches of gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free cookies.

If the children would also like to bake some goodies for the baking team to sell on their behalf, then please hand these into their class teacher on the morning of Friday 15th March, with a label saying what it is they've made and whether they are gluten/egg/dairy free or not. These will need to be in labelled containers so that we can get them back to you. Baked goodies can be comic relief themed or not.

Any remaining baked items will be sold on the playground at the end of the school day.

Kind regards,

Ms Guard and Mrs Stow

Red Nose Day Charity Sale - Year 5 Spring Term Life Skills Day

Dear Parents & Carers,                                                                                                            March 2024

We are excited to inform you of the upcoming Year 5 Life Skills Day. We ran a successful Life Skills Day in Autumn term, where the children focussed on skills in cooking a healthy meal, budgeting income against bills and spending, and teamwork. This term, our Life Skills Day will focus on planning and running a charity fund raising event. This is an area that a lot of Year 5 children have expressed interest in already, so we hope they will enjoy the challenge and responsibility that this brings, whilst raising money for a good cause.

The children do not yet know the focus for the day, and will not be told until the morning of Friday 8th March. We would prefer them not to know until that day, so that they are able to come up with their own ideas for the charity fund raising themselves. On this day, the children will work in groups to decide upon a product they will make, which will be sold at a market style sale, in our Junior Hall, at lunchtime on Friday 15th March. This is Red Nose Day, and all money raised will go to Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day campaign. Children from every year group in the school will be invited to attend the market during their lunchtime.

The event will be planned, advertised and run by the Year 5 children. There will also be a bake sale to the teachers, as the baking element of our Autumn Life Skills Day proved very popular. This Life Skills Day will allow children to develop skills in organising an event, budgeting and working out profit, as they will calculate the costings for the cookies.

On the week commencing Monday 11th March, the Year 5 children will make their stock, which will be sold at the charity sale on Friday 15th March. Children will decide what they would like to make to sell, but we are suggesting things such as origami, paintings, Pom Poms, football fact files. At school we are limited in the resources that we can provide for the children, as they may have many different ideas. We will be providing all the baking ingredients as well as paper, card, colours and paints. Therefore, some children may come home requesting additional materials that we are unable to provide, such as wool for pom poms. If you are able to provide any materials such as this, it would be great. However, it is not essential if you are unable to, as the children will be able to make something using the resources that we can provide.

On the day of the sale, all children will be advised that each item will cost 50p, and they can buy a maximum of two items each. Year 5 children will also be able to buy from the sale, so please do allow them to also bring in their £1 on Friday 15th March.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs. Stow and Ms. Guard

Year 5 Class Teachers
