YEAR 3 RE LESSONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
Dear parents and carers,
In response to parents advising school they don't know very much about our Christian distinctiveness, I would like to share what your Year 3 child will be learning throughout the year.
Year 3 broadens pupils’ understanding of Christianity and introduces Hinduism. The curriculum explores God's story, moral responsibility, faith traditions, and the relationship between belief and action.
Pupils begin with “What is the story?”, exploring the overarching Christian narrative found in the Bible. They develop an understanding of how different biblical events connect together within Christian belief. The unit “Why do we remember?” encourages reflection on memory, tradition, and the significance of remembering important events and teachings. At Christmas, pupils ask “What is the most important message of Christmas?” moving beyond familiar stories to consider deeper Christian themes such as incarnation, hope, peace, and God's relationship with humanity.
In the Spring term, pupils are introduced to Hinduism through “What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?” and “Why should Hindus live a good life?”. They explore Hindu beliefs, worship, traditions, and values, learning how Hindu teachings influence everyday decisions and behaviour. These units promote understanding of religious diversity within modern Britain. In “What kind of world does God want?”, pupils examine Christian beliefs about creation, stewardship, justice, and responsibility. They consider how Christians might respond to environmental and social challenges because of their beliefs. The Easter unit, “How is each person vital to the Easter narrative?”, explores the roles of different individuals involved in the Easter story and how each contributes to understanding its meaning.
The year concludes with “Words and Actions: Which is most important?”. Pupils investigate whether beliefs are best shown through what people say or what they do, encouraging thoughtful discussion about values, integrity, and faith in practice.
Overall, Year 3 develops deeper theological thinking while broadening pupils’ awareness of religious diversity and ethical responsibility.
Many thanks,
