ONLINE MOBILE PHONE ADVICE YEAR 6 PARENTS SEPT 2026
Dear Year 6 Parents and Carers,
Re: Keeping children safe and happy online
Your child has settled well into Year 6 and I am writing to ask for your support with an increasingly important issue: children's use of mobile phones, messaging apps, group chats and social media outside school.
This letter is not in response to any specific concern. Rather, it is based on our experience of supporting children over many years as they become more independent and begin communicating more frequently online. Whilst this is positive for most children, online interactions can sometimes lead to friendship difficulties, anxiety or upset.
Issues we commonly see include:
- Unkind comments in group chats.
- Photographs being shared without permission.
- Children feeling excluded.
- Friendship disagreements escalating online.
- Pressure to stay involved in conversations or groups.
Although these situations occur outside school, the impact is often felt in school, where children may arrive upset or worried and tell their teacher (rather than their parent) and then senior school staff spend time looking into it.
We therefore encourage parents to:
- Talk regularly with their child about their online activity.
- Know which apps they are using and who they are communicating with.
- Reinforce the importance of being kind, respectful and thoughtful online (as they would be in person). Using the comparison that your child would only put on line what they would be happy their nanna seeing, is a powerful metric.
- Encourage children to speak to a parent if they something makes them feel uncomfortable. Remind children they can talk to other trusted adults if they are anxious about online content.
What we have also seen, which parents will value knowing and deciding what action they want to take is:
- Children spamming chats
- Children communicating too late in the evening
- In general “too much screen time”
If there is an unpleasant thread / comment / conversation for screen shots to be taken (with a time and date stamp and who said what) as they will not always be on the phone when you want to find them later, as conversations can be deleted and the evidence gone.
We would also ask parents to be aware of age restrictions on apps and platforms. For example, WhatsApp has a minimum age of 13.
Please remind your child that if something online upsets them, they should stop engaging, leave the conversation if appropriate and tell you / another trusted adult as soon as possible. They should also “block”.
By working together, we can help children enjoy the benefits of technology while staying safe, happy and confident online.
Thank you for your continued support.
