Spiritual Garden Mosaics
Written by the school’s RE Leader, Mrs Menary.
Last academic year each class made a mosaic to go into the Spiritual Garden. It was a whole school art project that the children enjoyed as it was so different to anything that they currently create within the art curriculum. As a school, we followed the verses from Psalm 23 (which the benches in the garden read, text below). Each class had a different line or section of the psalm and created a picture in the mosaic tiles to represent this.
With help, I have been working very hard over the last few months to fill these mosaics with resin to ensure they are set and weather proof. This week (September 2021) we have hung them in the garden from shepherd crooks (in keeping with the theme of the Psalm). Here are a few pictures of some of them in the garden!
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
The History of the Spiritual Garden
written by Mrs Davis, Headteacher
The spiritual garden was set up in memory of our late caretaker, Mr David Sears (known as Dave), who sadly died from cancer in Spring 2018. As a church school it is important we have a spiritual garden where children can think and reflect. But this whole area is also a learning space to support our curriculum and a play space at play and lunchtimes to give children more space and time to run. It is a flexible space.
Two years ago the then faith team designed the space to reflect the text from Psalm 23 which was Dave’s favourite. The governors’ fund paid for a local landscaper to take the faith team’s vision and create a viable plan for the area and then did the work.
Last academic year Mrs Menary, our RE and Art leader had Art Week linked to RE and designed the each year group designed their mosaic to represent one aspect from Psalm 23.
Last year an ex-governor design different learning activities for the children to do in the spiritual garden at Christmas and Easter for them to learn more. She also designed a leavers’ event for our year 6 based in the Spiritual Garden.

In a storm in August 2020 the benches sustained some damage when a bough of the tress broke. These are still in the process of being repaired (C19 has slowed this repair process down).
