Mission statement

  • We are a Church school where our Christian faith lies at the heart of our ethos, creating and nurturing a compassionate and secure family community
  • We are an inclusive school where, within an environment of educational excellence, each child’s ability is recognised, valued and developed through a creative and challenging curriculum
  • We are at the centre of a wider partnership between parents, Church and the local community working to prepare the children for their next steps in life

In order to achieve this we aim to:

  • Live the values at the heart of our faith
  • Have mutual respect in all our relationships to create a secure learning environment
  • Provide an accessible, broad and balanced curriculum that meets the needs of all our children
  • Develop children’s natural curiosity and help them to be excited by learning
  • Build children’s self-esteem in an environment where effort is recognised and achievement is valued
  • Work with parents to support their children’s learning and individual development
  • Involve the church family in supporting the personal, spiritual and moral development of the whole school community
  • Work with local organisations and charities to develop the children’s awareness of the world around them

Ethos and values

As a Church School the Christian faith lies at the heart of our ethos and underpins the way we work and live together as a community. Learning to take care of ourselves and others and to be tolerant and forgiving are important lessons that stand the children in good stead as they grow up.

We are fortunate to have strong links with all the local churches and particularly with St Mary’s Parish church, where we attend and participate in services every term. Local clergy visit the school every week to lead collective worship. Although as a church school RE and collective worship are intrinsic parts of our teaching and learning policy, parents are legally permitted to withdraw their children from these activities. Supervision would be provided.

The school aims to provide a happy, safe and pleasant environment where all members of the community are treated with respect. We encourage good manners and responsible behaviour, and foster a positive attitude to learning by commending positive behaviour, effort and achievement through our consistent system of rewards.

Following our PSHE and Citizenship programme the children learn about themselves as developing individuals and as members of their communities, building on their own experiences and on the early learning goals for personal, social and emotional development. They learn the basic rules and skills for keeping themselves healthy and safe and for behaving well. They have opportunities to show they can take some responsibility for themselves and their environment.

The children are encouraged to have a voice in school planning and we have a school council with representatives from every class who meet regularly to give their ideas on planned improvement and to help find ways of making school life even better.

Working in partnership with parents

We feel that the education of your child relies very strongly on a joint partnership between home and school. We have gained Surrey’s Working in Partnership with Parents Award and that recognizes that we work closely with parents, involving them in their children’s education and the very positive relationships, which have been developed as a result. We do this by keeping parents informed about the curriculum and how they can help at home, inviting them to help in school, having parent teacher consultation meetings twice a year and sending home an annual report. Once a week parents are also welcome to ‘drop in’ after school for an informal chat or admire work on display. Staff are always happy to meet and chat about any concerns that parent have. We also aim to seek parents’ views about any policy changes or new initiatives.

The school has a very active and successful Parent Teacher Association. The Association provides money to purchase extra items for the benefit of the children. They are a registered charity with trustees. All parents are automatically members and the committee is elected annually in the autumn term. They organise a number of social and fund-raising events throughout the year; and have provided the school with IT equipment and exciting playground equipment as well as supporting the visits we have from for example, theatre companies that help to enrich the curriculum.
